Lunch-and-Learn Series Provides Metal Building Systems Education

Kirby Building Systems University continues to strengthen industry education through its AIA/HSW‑accredited STEEL SMARTS: Understanding Metal Building Systems lunch‑and‑learn series, led by Kirby Builder Trainer Steve Hudak. Designed for architects, engineers, and design professionals, the course delivers practical insight into the fundamentals of metal building systems by bridging the gap between conceptual design and real‑world fabrication.

In order to be accredited with AIA the materials need to be general to the metal buildings industry and not brand-specific, therefore all Nucor Buildings Group Authorized Builders will benefit.  The one-hour program also provides PDH and HSW credits.

The program is centered around the following Learning Objectives and after completing this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the primary structural components of a PEMB and explain how gravity and lateral loads are transferred through the system.
  2. Explore standard metal building components primary framing, bracing, secondary, insulation, covering, trim, and additional components such as cranes and mezzanines.
  3. Evaluate code‑driven design requirements including wind, snow, seismic, and energy compliance for metal building systems.
  4. Recognize common architectural coordination issues and apply detailing strategies that improve constructability and building performance.
  5. Assess how envelope systems and insulation strategies affect energy efficiency, moisture control, and occupant safety.

Hudak recently traveled through Wisconsin with Nick Mueller, one of Kirby’s District Sales Managers, where they taught the STEEL SMARTS program to 45 architects and engineers over three days. The sessions blended technical clarity with hands‑on industry experience, giving attendees a grounded understanding of how PEMB systems behave, perform, and integrate with modern design requirements.

Kirby offers the course both in‑person and via webinar, giving firms flexibility in how they participate. While the virtual format provides convenient access for remote teams, Hudak notes that in‑person sessions foster stronger personal connection—often opening the door to deeper discussion, more questions, and collaborative problem‑solving around real project challenges.

As Kirby Building Systems University continues expanding its educational footprint, the STEEL SMARTS program remains a cornerstone of its mission: equipping design professionals with the knowledge they need to confidently specify and integrate metal building systems in today’s evolving construction landscape.
